A Haddon Township eighth-grader has taken home the top prize in the New Jersey Knights of Columbus State Spelling Bee.
Appropriately, Isabella “Izzy” Klawitter’s win came after properly spelling the word “A-P-P-R-O-P-R-I-A-T-E” during the event April 7 at Epiphany Parish in Brick. She reached the final stage after two previous spelling bee rounds: one local, held at Santa Maria Council #1443 in Haddon Township, and the other regional, Saint Patrick’s Council #1994 in Woodbury.
In addition to Klawitter, who attends William G. Rohrer Middle School, two other local eighth-grade winners from the Santa Maria spelling bee advanced to the state finals: Declan Walsh of Christ the King Regional School in Haddonfield, and Harrison Brown of Collingswood Middle School.
The N.J. Knights of Columbus Spelling Bees are open to eighth-graders every year. The competitions are held at councils throughout New Jersey, with winners advancing to competitions at the diocesan level. Students then move on to the state final, held every spring in Brick.
