The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of May.

Matthew Goff

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Lacrosse

Matthew Goff

Matthew Goff ended his high school career by seeing his team get to the brink of its first state championship appearance. The Holy Spirit senior has been one of the Spartans’ most consistent scorers over the last four years, tallying a career 200 points before his team came up just short in the state Non-Public B semifinal game in overtime against Rutgers Prep. Prior to that final game, Goff had 34 goals and 26 assists on the season, and had accumulated 134 goals and 66 assists over his career. On May 7 and May 9, Goff collected back-to-back eight-point games in victories over Ocean City and Cedar Creek.

Braeden Lipoff

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Baseball

Braeden Lipoff

As the temperature got warmer, Braeden Lipoff’s game heated up.

The Rams’ sophomore catcher was one of Gloucester Catholic’s hottest hitters in May, batting .475 and driving in 16 runs in 14 games during the month.

Lipoff started the month on a 9-for-12 tear in his first four games, which included a 4-for-4 game against Williamstown on May 6, when he fell a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Heading into the Non-Public B State Championship game, Lipoff was batting .379 on the season with 26 RBIs and three home runs, as the Rams were 26-2.

Anna Marquardt

Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken

Lacrosse

Anna Marquardt

The numbers keep growing for Bishop Eustace Preparatory School’s Anna Marquardt.

The junior lacrosse midfielder surpassed the 100-goal plateau this season, as she scored 50 times this year. Aside from scoring, Marquardt was phenomenal in other areas, leading the Crusaders in both draw controls (116) and ground balls (50). Marquardt, a Fairfield University, Connecticut, commit, gathered her 300th career draw control May 7. That game, the Crusaders began an eight-game winning streak that took them into the semifinal round of the state Non-Public B playoffs.

Bishop Eustace finished its season at 13-5.

Dominic Polistina

Saint Augustine Preparatory School, Richland

Golf

Dominic Polistina

It’s tough to imagine a more dramatic finish to a high school golf season.

Saint Augustine Preparatory School junior Dominic Polistina eagled his final hole to win the Cape-Atlantic League Championships Tournament at Ballamor Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township on May 20. Polistina roared down the stretch, shooting four-under through his final five holes to win the tournament by two strokes over the 30-player field with a one-over-par score of 73. Polistina was surrounded by a talented team that went 10-3 on the season and finished third in the South Jersey Non-Public A Tournament.

Albert Michael Ricciardi

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Crew

Albert Michael Ricciardi

Albert Michael Ricciardi started the month in style by winning a City Championship on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia on May 4. The Holy Spirit senior, who rows a boys varsity single, continued his hot streak by taking bronze in a field of 37 at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the largest high school rowing event in the county, on May 18.

Ricciardi capped off his high school career by placing fourth at the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championships Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden. He will continue his academic and athletic endeavors at La Salle University in Philadelphia in the fall.

Lisey St. Jean

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Softball

Lisey St. Jean

Lisey St. Jean closed the book on one of the most dominant high school softball careers in South Jersey history. The Paul VI senior outfielder and North Carolina State University signee finished her outstanding career with 183 hits, 159 runs scored, 105 stolen bases and a .614 batting average.

St. Jean finished strong, batting .595 in her final month of her career, as the Eagles finished up another successful season with back-to-back 20-win seasons. Paul VI won eight straight games before finally bowing out in the South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinal.
