Sister Cynthia Ludwick, SSJ, 91, who served in the Diocese of Camden for 34 years, died Feb. 2 at Saint Joseph Villa in Flourtown, Pa.

Sister Cynthia Ludwick, SSJ

The daughter of the late William and Josephine (nee Killar) Ludwick, Sister Cynthia (formerly Sister William Josephine) attended public grade school and West Chester High School.

Entering the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Chestnut Hill, in September 1955, she professed her final vows in 1963. In addition to the Diocese of Camden, Sister Cynthia served in the Archdioceses of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

In 1959, she served for a year at Saint Augustine School in Ocean City. She left to minister in other cities, returning to South Jersey in 1974 as assistant vocations director for the Diocese of Camden. In 1980, she was assigned to the Saint Pius X Retreat Center in Blackwood; in 1988, she served at Most Holy Redeemer, Westville Grove.

For more than 20 years, beginning in 1990, she provided pastoral care to the community of Saint John of God Community Services, influencing “countless lives with her compassion and loving generosity,” the organization said in announcing her passing.

In 2012, Sister Cynthia wrote a Letter to the Editor in the Catholic Star Herald congratulating the Diocese of Camden on its 75th anniversary. In the letter, she expressed gratitude for her opportunities to minister in South Jersey, thanking “all the priests, sisters, brothers, deacons, teachers, retreatants, students, parents and friends for all their support, respect and love. My heart and soul have been touched and blessed by so many great men and women. I thank you for your goodness and kindness.”

Sister Cynthia was preceded in death by her sisters, Anna Jane Land Achey and Estelle Ward. She is survived by nieces, nephews and the members of her Congregation, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 7 at Saint Joseph Villa.
