Brother Mickey O’Neill McGrath, an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales and artist who lives and works in Camden City, was honored at the Catholic Media Convention in Denver, Col., June 19-21, for “Saved by Beauty: The Gospel in the life of Dorothy Day and St. Francis de Sales.”

It was awarded first place in the category Popular Presentation of the Catholic Faith.

“This is a charming, colorful tribute to our soon-to-be St. Dorothy. The author-painter’s artwork and revealing text tell the engrossing story of Lady Day’s full, exciting life – especially her holiness and saintly service to the People of God,” the judges said.

Artist and author Brother Mickey is a popular presenter at conferences, parishes and retreat centers throughout the United States and Canada. For more about him or his work, go to beestill.org.

Also at the Catholic Media Convention, freelance photographer Alan M. Dumoff and the Catholic Star Herald took second place in the Best Sports Photo category for an image of an umpire calling a St. Augustine Prep (Richland) baseball runner safe in a game against Sacred Heart High School (Vineland) on May 12, 2012. It was printed in the May 18, 2012, issue of the paper. For more of Dumoff’s images of events in the Diocese of Camden, go to his website, ccdphotolibrary.smugmug.com.

The Star Herald took a third place award in the category Best Photo-Illustration for an image that accompanied Bishop Emeritus Joseph Galante’s Nov. 16, 2012, column “Seeking a new vision for Camden.” The photo, showing one of the crosses staked in a park adjacent to Camden City Hall in protest of the city’s high murder rate, was taken by managing editor Carl Peters.
