Bishop Dennis Sullivan has appointed James E. Andrews as the new director of Black Catholic Ministries for the Diocese of Camden.
Andrews retired last year as a claims manager for the U.S. Department of Labor, where he worked for 36 years. At the Department of Labor, Andrews managed a staff of 12 engaged in administering federal workers’ compensation laws, regulation procedures and policies. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Career Award which is the highest award a federal civilian can received.
A graduate of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Andrews, a Sicklerville resident, along with his wife Dolores, is a member of St. Martin de Porres Church in Philadelphia. Andrews serves as a lector and as a member of the parish council and finance council. He is also on the Friends of St. Martin de Porres School Board of Directors. This Board through agreement with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia assumed the leadership and future financial sustainability of St Martin de Porres School.
Black Catholic Ministries supports ministries with African American Catholics in two predominantly black parishes in the Diocese of Camden as well as African Americans, Haitians, West Indians, Nigerians and those from other African nations who worship in other parishes in South Jersey. In his new position, Andrews will also serve as coordinator for the diocesan Racial Justice Commission. Andrews succeeds Corlis Sellers, associate director for Black Catholic Ministries for the past three years, who recently relocated to North Carolina.
