Bishop Joseph Williams celebrated Mass for the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal’s First Saturday Devotion on Feb. 7, sharing the vision of “the Church as a field hospital, an image gifted to us by Pope Francis,” he said during his homily.

“God is more pleased with the Church that finds the one lost sheep than the Church that stays within her confines to care for the 99 that were never lost,” he said to those gathered in Saint Michael Church, the Parish of Saint Monica, Atlantic City.

The Bishop also noted that the Church sees teaching as a work of mercy, that “the Church is often called Mater et Magistra, mother and teacher, and they go together.”

“Think of this: If we don’t teach, the sheep become lost, and we have more healing to do. Wouldn’t it be better if the sheep were never lost?” he continued. “That’s why we need the Church as Magistra as well.”

Bishop Joseph Williams preaches the homily during the First Saturday Devotion. Upcoming dates are March 7, April 4 and May 2.

First Saturday Devotions offer attendees moments of peace, reflection and spiritual renewal. These Saturdays include the recitation of the Rosary and meditation on its mysteries, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Mass.

Future First Saturday Devotions are: March 7, April 4 and May 2.
