The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of March.

Kevin Brewster

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Basketball

The Holy Spirit High School boys basketball team had plenty of heroes as the Spartans secured a 20-win season and the Cape-Atlantic League United Division.

Junior Kevin Brewster did his part as one of the team’s top scorers this season, contributing 329 points, including 48 3-pointers.

Brewster was one point shy of matching his career high during the first round of the South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs when he delivered a 24-point effort in a 74-54 win over Ranney School on March 2. Brewster followed with a team-high 14 points in the Spartans’ final game of the season against Holy Cross Prep Academy in the South Jersey semifinal.

Riley Fitzpatrick

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester

Swimming

Riley Fitzpatrick ended her high school season on top of the podium in the state’s biggest meet.

Fitzpatrick, a junior, secured individual state championship gold for Gloucester Catholic High School in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Meet of Champions on March 1 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology.

Fitzpatrick swam a blazing 1:02.91 to win the race by almost a half a second over a field of the fastest swimmers in the state. It followed an impressive showing at the South Jersey Interscholastic Swimming Association Invitational, where she won the 200 individual medley.

Noah Glenn

Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken

Indoor Track and Field

Winning a state championship in the high jump was only the beginning of an incredible stretch for Noah Glenn.

The Bishop Eustace Preparatory School senior won a Non-Public B championship by leaping six feet in the high jump on Feb. 20. Glenn also placed third in the 55-meter hurdles and seventh in the shot put at the state championships.

Glenn followed that remarkable performance with an incredible feat by earning All-America honors in the pentathlon at Nike Indoor Nationals, placing seventh with 3,303 points in five events. Glenn’s score was the fourth-highest in South Jersey history.

Nicholas Lento

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Ice Hockey

Nicholas Lento enjoyed back-to-back 20-goal seasons as he hit the milestone on the final game of a historic hockey season for Paul VI High School.

The Eagles set a program record for wins with a 17-5 record. They also won their division and made an appearance in the Colonial Valley Conference Tournament championship game.

Lento, a junior forward, scored 20 goals and 26 assists this season and notched his 100th career point in the process.

Lento usually scored in bunches as he recorded 13 multi-point games including a goal and two assists in the Egan Cup final in a 4-3 loss to Pope John XXIII.

Jalyn Moore

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Basketball

As one of Gloucester Catholic’s most versatile players, Jalyn Moore helped fuel the Rams’ girls basketball program to its first state championship in 43 years.

Moore, a senior, scored 391 points this season including 70 3-pointers to lead the Rams to a 26-4 record and their first state title since 1983. After playing her freshman year at West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia, Moore made a significant impact at Gloucester Catholic over the next three seasons, scoring 862 points as a Ram and surpassing the 1,000-point milestone for her career.

Moore, who scored 43 points in four state playoff games in March, will play Division 1 basketball at Niagara University next season.

Sammy Spaulding

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Wrestling

Sammy Spaulding secured his spot as one of the best wrestlers at Camden Catholic High School.

Spaulding kicked off March by winning the Region 7 title at 132 pounds to become the seventh wrestler from Camden Catholic to win four regional championships.

Spaulding helped the Irish win three state championships including back-to-back Non-Public B titles, going undefeated in both seasons.

Spaulding took fourth place in the individual state championships in Atlantic City, finishing on the podium for the third straight year. The United States Naval Academy commit was an individual state champion last year at 132 pounds. He went 146-16 in his high school career.
