NORTH CAPE MAY – Father Philemon Okoh, CM, celebrated Holy Thursday Mass the evening of April 2 at Saint John of God Church, Saint John Neumann Parish.
Father Okoh, who is in residence at the parish and serves at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Cape May, washed the feet of 12 parishioners, recalling the act of Jesus washing the feet of the apostles.
“The ceremony today is … a sacrifice of service to others, a sacrifice of humility,” Father Okoh said in his homily. “[Jesus] was their master, but He came down as low as washing the feet of his disciples.”
Father James H. King, parish pastor, concelebrated Mass. A Holy Thursday Mass in Spanish was celebrated concurrently at the Saint Raymond Church in Villas, a parish worship site.
Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the apostles, during which He instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the priesthood.
