The Diocese of Camden’s faithful are invited to join Bishop Joseph A. Williams, clergy and religious on Nov. 7 for the Diocese’s biennial Marian Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

Dedicated in 1959, the basilica is the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America, and has been designated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage.

Visitors to the basilica, which number one million annually from around the globe, have included Saints John Paul II and Teresa of Kolkata. The basilica is known for its Byzantine-Romanesque architecture; 80 chapels and oratories that honor the Blessed Mother; and the majestic Trinity Dome mosaic of saints.

The daylong pilgrimage will include Mass in the Great Upper Church with Bishop Williams. There also will be opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation; prayer and contemplation, including a multilingual recitation of the rosary; a concert of sacred music with diocesan and school music ministers and choirs; and a procession of parishes.

Pilgrims can also explore the basilica’s art, architecture, chapels, and oratories, and visit the gift shop and book store.

There are nearly two dozen chartered buses traveling from the six counties of the Diocese to Washington. Those interested in taking part in the pilgrimage can contact their parish office.
