Seniors in Atlantic City are invited to participate in a new program designed to offer time and space to share faith and fellowship, hear from guest speakers, play games and more.
With a name befitting its host shore community – AC Gulls (God’s United, Loving, Lifelong Servants) – the new program is being organized by the Parish of Saint Monica Parish, and will include weekly, three-hour meetings.
“Our goal is to provide seniors with fellowship, friendship, learning and enjoyable activities,” said parishioner Blanche Toole, one of five seniors who formed a committee to design the program. “The opportunity to meet new people and spend meaningful time together was the greatest inspiration behind the program.”
Parishioners Marilyn Kirkland and Maryanne Martin, who are also sisters, emphasized that the AC Gulls program has been designed to be inclusive of all seniors. “All are welcome – Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and people of all faith backgrounds. We believe in Jesus’ call to love our neighbors, and we want everyone to feel included.”
Toole shared that the program’s inspiration came about this past summer, when she and other women in the parish who enjoyed playing Mahjong had an interest in sharing the game with others. She approached the parish pastor, Father Robert Hughes, about using the parish hall for a few hours each week to host the activity – and he was very supportive.
“There was immediate interest, and parishioners appreciated the opportunity to meet, socialize and learn something new together,” Toole said. “When the class ended, we approached Father [Hughes] about continuing the activity. Since he had previously expressed interest in creating a senior program, we decided to build on that idea.”
The AC Gulls program will include a weekly meeting, and each session will open with time for light refreshments, conversation and a chance for participants to get to know one another. Next, there will be a different activity like a guest speaker, chair exercises, yoga, walking, stretching or Lectio Divina.
The second half of the gathering will give attendees the chance to choose from various activities like Mahjong, adult coloring, puzzles, origami, chess, checkers, Bible Bingo and more.
While the program will officially launch Nov. 4, Toole and members of the committee will host an informational session at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Quaremba Hall (15 N. Georgia Ave.) to give seniors the chance to learn more and register for the program.
The session will also feature the director of senior services in Atlantic City, who will share details on additional resources and services available. Additionally, prospective attendees can share thoughts and ideas on what they might like to see from the program.
“We hope seniors will gain friendship, fellowship, and a renewed sense of connection,” said Marcia Mancini, another member of the committee. “The program will provide opportunities to stay informed about relevant topics, learn new skills, explore new interests, and remain active and engaged in a relaxed, enjoyable environment.”
Parishioner Linda Kemmerer, who also served on the organizing committee, shared her encouragement for seniors to get involved. “Whether you enjoy games, staying active, listening to interesting speakers, or simply spending time with others, we hope to create a warm and welcoming place where seniors can share experiences, make new friends and enjoy life.”
