Margaret Bernard, a parishioner since 1946 of Saint Mary Church in Salem (now part of Saint Gabriel the Archangel Parish, Carneys Point), will celebrate her 100th birthday this Thursday, Feb. 11.
Born in Monroeville in 1921 to Mary and John Miller, she was baptized at Saint Bridget Church in Glassboro. In 1946 she married John Bernard, a farmer in Salem County, after his service in World War II. They continued the farming life, and John died in 2010 at the age of 93.
Today, Margaret still lives in the farmhouse they bought together in the early 1950s, and is retired from her job as a meat wrapper for several grocery chains for many years.
Until the coronavirus shutdown, she enjoyed shopping, dining out, worshipping on Sundays with the Saint Mary Church community, and visiting friends and family, including her two children, Michael Bernard and Mary Bernard Esposito, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A happy birthday drive-by at the farm from well-wishers is scheduled for this Saturday.
