The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of March.

Martin Cosgrove

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Wrestling

Martin Cosgrove

Martin Cosgrove was the only wrestler from South Jersey to win a state championship this year as the Camden Catholic senior bested the 215-pound bracket at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Cosgrove, a University of Pennsylvania commit, went undefeated this year, which included a thrilling 6-5 victory over Passaic Valley’s PJ Casale in the 215-pound state final.

After missing the postseason last year due to a broken hand, Cosgrove rallied to become just the third two-time state champion in Camden Catholic wrestling history.

Tanner Jones

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Swimming

Tanner Jones

Tanner Jones saved his best for last.

The Gloucester Catholic senior earned two trips to the podium on the final weekend of the season by finishing fourth in the 200 meter freestyle in a time of 1:41.54 before placing second in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:32.54 at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions.

Jones helped the Rams to a 9-2 record this year and a 28-6 overall record during his four years. He will swim for the Crimson Tide at the University of Alabama next year.

Morgan Keil

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Indoor Track

Morgan Keil

Morgan Keil won a Non-Public B state championship in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 1.25 inches to finish on the top spot of the podium.

Keil added another seven inches to her throw a week later, as her distance of 35-8.25 was good enough for 15th place at the Meet of Champions on March 5 at the Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River. Keil is committed to play soccer at Stockton University next year.

Michael Mazero

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Indoor Track and Field

Michael Mazero

Michael Mazero became the first indoor track Meet of Champions winner in Paul VI High School history when he won the 400 meter-dash March 5 at the Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River.

Mazero’s time of 49.02 was the fifth-fastest ever recorded in the 400 in Camden County history. The previous week, Mazero ran a 49.33 to win the Non-Public A state championship in the 400. He is committed to run track at Cornell University next year.

Scarlett McGlinchey

Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Newfield

Swimming

Scarlett McGlinchey

Scarlett McGlinchey completed her first high school swimming season with a spot on the podium with the seventh-best time in the state in the 100 meter breaststroke with a 1:05.66.

McGlinchey’s performance at the Meet of Champions was twice as nice as she helped the Villagers’ 200 medley relay team to an eighth-place finish in 1:49.70 to take home two medals against the best swimmers in the state. McGlinchey was a versatile swimmer for OLMA during the regular season, regularly winning races in the breaststroke, butterfly and individual.

Sara McShea

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Basketball

Sara McShea

There were many factors that made the Paul VI girls basketball team earn the consensus title of best team in South Jersey. Sara McShea was a big reason.

The United States Military Academy at West Point commit was strong in the post and a leader on and off the court for the Eagles, who went 24-4 on the season. McShea averaged north of 14 points and eight rebounds a game and notched her 1,000th career point and 700th career rebound March 4 in a South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinal win over Mount Saint Mary.
