The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of November.

Kassadi Avent

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Volleyball

Kassadi Avent

One of the most consistent players on the powerful Paul VI roster, Kassadi Avent finished her high school career strong with 121 kills this season as the Eagles finished with a 22-3 record. Shifting between outside hitter and middle blocker, Avent led the team in blocks (22) and supplied 42 digs on defense this season. Her seven kills in the South Jersey Non-Public A championship on Nov. 14 tied Megan Evans for a team-high that day. Avent finished her high school career with 263 kills, 86 blocks and 89 digs. She will continue her volleyball career at the University of New Haven next year.

Ethan Caprarola

Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken

Cross Country

Ethan Caprarola

Ethan Caprarola sprinted into November by placing fourth in a time of 16:32.37 at the Bob Kiessling Invitational at DREAM Park in Logan Township on Nov. 2. The Bishop Eustace senior continued to compete at the front of the pack by placing fourth in the Non-Public B state meet at Holmdel in a time of 17:42 on Nov. 9. A week later, Caprarola duplicated that exact time back at Holmdel in the state Meet of Champions to finish out his high school cross country career. However, Caprarola still has many miles to go in a Crusaders’ uniform as he competes on the winter and spring track and field teams.

Ty Costabile

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Football

Ty Costabile

Behind Ty Costabile’s strong left arm, the Holy Spirit High School football team enjoyed a 10-2 season and a trip to the Non-Public B state semifinals. Costabile, a junior quarterback, hit the 1,500 passing yard mark for the second straight season and hurled 17 touchdowns this season in leading the Spartans to a West Jersey Football League Constitution Division title. In four November games, Costabile threw for 544 yards and seven touchdowns, leading the Spartans to a pair of playoff wins and a Thanksgiving victory over longtime rival Atlantic City. Costabile will enter his senior year with more than 3,000 passing yards on his resume.

Savannah Freeland

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Field Hockey

Savannah Freeland

Savannah Freeland proved to be the perfect addition to an already powerful Camden Catholic field hockey team. Freeland, a transfer from Lenape High School, scored 32 goals and 15 assists this season as the Irish returned to the Non-Public state championship game for the fourth straight year. Freeland finished her junior year strong by scoring in all five November games, piling up eight goals and three assists in those crucial games. Her first quarter tally in the state championship game was the Irish’s lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Oak Knoll.

Emma McCarthy

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Soccer

Emma McCarthy

It was the shot heard around the state. Paul VI Junior Emma McCarthy’s left-footed blast in overtime earned the Eagles their first soccer state championship in school history as they defeated Immaculate Heart Academy, 1-0, on Nov. 20. McCarthy, who is committed to play lacrosse at the University of North Carolina, scored a team-high 17 goals this season while adding eight assists. McCarthy’s November highlights included both goals in a 2-1 victory over Red Bank Catholic in the South Jersey Non-Public A semifinal before supplying the assist on Camryn Koerner’s lone goal in the sectional championship.

Teddy Woolery

Wildwood Catholic Academy, North Wildwood

Soccer

Teddy Woolery

The Wildwood Catholic Academy boys soccer team enjoyed its best season in nearly a decade as the Crusaders racked up 15 wins for the first time since 2016. Senior Teddy Woolery was responsible for a lot of that joy as he deposited 20 goals in his final season. Woolery compiled seven multi-goal games and contributed a team-best eight assists as the Crusaders went 15-5-1 and made it to the semifinal round of the South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs. Woolery’s final goal came on Nov. 8 in a 5-2 quarterfinal round victory over Calvary Christian.
