CAMDEN – “This is a special occasion for the local Church.”
With these words, Bishop Joseph Williams opened the noontime Mass on May 27 in celebration of the anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – “the Mother Church of our Diocese.”
Bishop Williams was joined by clergy, including Father Stephen Robbins, administrator of the Cathedral. While the celebration is a solemnity at the Cathedral, it is a feast day across the Diocese of Camden.
In his homily, Father Robbins reflected on the rich history of the Cathedral parish, reminding the faithful that this anniversary is “the feast day for the whole Diocese,” and that “for our beautiful parish as a cathedral, we celebrate with utmost festivities and joy.”
He noted that the church was originally dedicated in 1893 and later became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Camden in 1937, when the Diocese was established.
Referencing Isaiah 56:7, Father Robbins described the Cathedral as “a house of prayer for all peoples.” For decades, he said, those of many cultures, places and walks of life have come to the Cathedral to worship, pray and encounter God – a legacy of faith that continues today.
