Tyler Phillips, a 2015 graduate of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken, made his Major League Baseball debut with smashing success. The 26-year-old Lumberton native came in relief for the Philadelphia Phillies on July 7 and struck out seven hitters in four innings to break a 123-year-old team record for the most strikeouts in a relief appearance.
The old record (six) was recorded by Bill Duggleby in 1901.
Phillips entered the game in the fifth inning, trailing 5-0, and struck out the side. He allowed three hits and one earned run over his four innings of work in the 6-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
Phillips was drafted in the 16th round out of high school by the Texas Rangers in 2015. He was claimed on Waivers by the Phillies in 2021 and has been a member of the Phillies’ farm system since then. He was called up to the Big Leagues on July 5 from the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Phillips joins a list of Bishop Eustace players to play in a Major League Baseball game, which includes two of his former Crusaders’ teammates: Zac Gallen (Class of 2013) and Devin Smeltzer (2014).
