Camden Catholic graduate Kevin McDonnell has been invited to the Olympic Trials by USA Track & Field as a marathon qualifier.
McDonnell, who ran at Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, after high school, will take part in the Olympic Trials set for Feb. 3 in Orlando, Fla.
McDonnell ran a time of 2:17.22 at the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 8 to finish under the qualifying time of 2:18. McDonnell, who grew up in Moorestown and now lives in Cherry Hill, graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 2008.
“Some of my greatest life lessons and values were formed at CCHS, through conversations with my peers regarding their backgrounds and experiences, not just in the classroom,” McDonnell said on Camden Catholic’s website. “Thanks to the community of friends, mentors, alumni and the current student body at Camden Catholic, I continue to aspire to be not just an excellent employee or athlete, but furthermore, an excellent person.”
Through Oct. 10, McDonnell is one of 153 qualifiers for the marathon Olympic Trials. At St. Joseph’s, he set a school record with a time of 29:16.01 in the 10,000 meters and was runner-up in the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships in 2009 as the Hawks won a team title.
More recently, he won the Philly 10K in August in a time of 30:40.
