Catholic Charities of South Jersey invited staff to celebrate Flag Day on June 14 with the raising of a new American flag at their Camden office. The flag, procured through the office of Congressman Donald Norcross, was previously flown over the U.S. Capitol. With the flag-raising, Catholic Charities also honored Memorial Day, Juneteenth and World Refugee Day — which all fall within weeks of Flag Day – by having selected individuals officially raise the flag. They were: a veteran and current client, a Black staff member, and two Syrian immigrants who are now U.S. citizens with the support of Catholic Charities.
“This country is probably the most diverse country in the world. It is unique. So we will celebrate that uniqueness,” said Kevin Hickey, executive director. Jose Sanchez, director of Immigration, Refugees and Migrant Services, agreed, saying, “We should be happy to work at an organization and live in a country that allows us to be ourselves.”
