The following memorandum was sent to all priests and school principals of the Diocese of Camden earlier today by Fr. Robert Hughes, vicar general of the diocese, on behalf of Bishop Dennis Sullivan:
On Saturday, March 14, 2020, Bishop Sullivan issued a statement temporarily closing all Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Camden effective Monday, March 16, 2020. In his statement the Bishop noted that the schools likely would be closed for a minimum of two weeks.
Given the current situation and the escalating numbers diagnosed with COVID-19, Bishop Sullivan is extending the closure of all Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Camden until at least April 20, 2020 which incorporates the previously scheduled break for Easter.
Diocesan and Catholic Schools staff will continue to monitor the situation closely in order to determine when it will be appropriate to re-open our schools.
Students and families are encouraged to follow the directives from the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services as we continue to work together for the common good, to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and prevent further infection.
Bishop is well aware that the continued closure of our schools places an enormous burden on parents and will be challenging for families. He is proud of the tireless efforts and creative work of principals and faculty to continue to educate their students and grateful to the parents for their ongoing partnership in supporting their children’s learning in new ways. He is also very impressed by the resilience and dedication of the students to their studies.
