Deacon Joseph Izzo, 68, of Sewell, died Nov. 12.
Ordained to the permanent diaconate on May 9, 2009, he was first assigned to the faith community at Church of the Incarnation in Mantua. Since 2014, he has served at Mary, Queen of All Saints in Pennsauken.
He was the son of the late John J. Izzo, Sr. and the late Elsie (nee Washburn) Izzo; and husband of the late Anja Izzo (nee Hoglund).
He is survived by his son, Nathan Izzo; brother John J. (Christine) Izzo; sister Patricia A. (John) Hosey; and spiritual family, the Bianchinis. He is also survived by his nephews John F. Hosey III, Joseph Hosey, John A. Izzo and nieces Gina Izzo and Maria Izzo.
Deacon Leo McBlain, director of personnel for the diocesan Office of the Permanent Diaconate, recalled Deacon Izzo as “both studious and pastoral,” whose “quest for new knowledge of Scripture and God never ended. He served the people of his parish and was particularly devoted to serving those in prison.”
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Nov. 19 at Mary, Queen of All Saints. Interment was at New Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Bellmawr. Memorial contributions may be made to the House of Charity, Diocese of Camden, 631 Market Street, Camden, NJ 08102.
