The Catholic Star Herald and the Diocese of Camden’s Office of Communications have been recognized with 16 awards from the Catholic Media Association, including a first place honor for Best Diocesan Pastoral Message.
The awards, judged by a group of Catholic publishers and media professionals, were announced during the association’s annual conference, held July 4-7 year in Portland, Ore. Formerly known as the Catholic Press Association, the organization’s members include hundreds of Catholic newspapers, magazines, journals, books, wire services, video, TV, podcasts and other multimedia sources from across the United States and Canada. “For more than six years, I’ve often referred to my colleagues as amongst the best in their fields. It is gratifying to see them recognized across the board – from pixels and soundwaves to ink and paper – for the quality of their work,” said Mike Walsh, diocesan director of communications and associate publisher of the Diocese’s newspaper.

“This year, every member of our team of 11 received a Catholic Media Association kudo, along with several of our contributors,” Walsh said. “Of course, none of us do this work for the recognition, but to promote and support the work of the Catholic Church, here in South Jersey and around the world. We promise to keep working hard for our readers, viewers, listeners and all the faithful. And we thank Bishop Dennis Sullivan for encouraging us to keep trying new things to bring Christ’s message to all people.”
Among the top awards was a first place honor for Bishop Dennis Sullivan, who wrote a pastoral message on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. In his writing, he recounts his experiences of ministering in Lower Manhattan during and after the World Trade Center attack. Peter G. Sánchez, staff writer, was recognized with a second place award for his “A Priest & His Chalice” series, which features priests of the Diocese sharing the heartfelt backstories of their chalices. Staff and freelance partners were also awarded for the “Talking Catholic” and “Talking Saints” podcasts.
