“At the heart of every cathedral, every diocese, sits the Bishop’s chair – a symbol of his teaching authority and his direct link to the apostles.”
These words describe DeSales Media’s series “The Chair,” which celebrates Catholicism in dioceses across the country by delving into their individual histories and communities, cathedral architecture and the faith of the bishop.
Now available on YouTube for the first time, the Diocese of Camden and Bishop Dennis Sullivan are featured along with the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden.
In the 22-minute video, Bishop Sullivan speaks about his family, growing up in the Bronx, N.Y., his journey to the priesthood, and eventually, his appointment in 2013 as the eighth bishop of Camden.
“I got a phone call, ‘The holy father wants you to be a bishop,’” Bishop Sullivan related. “I said to the nuncio, ‘I think you got the wrong Sullivan. There are a lot of us here in New York.’ He said, ‘No, I got the right Sullivan.’”
Explaining how there are trepidations every day to lead a diocese, he said, “When you have all of this responsibility, you wonder, ‘Am I making the right decisions? Am I being a good pastor? By these decisions I have to make, am I building up the Kingdom of God?’”
The series also goes into the history of Camden’s Cathedral, which was built in 1866. The gothic church became a cathedral in 1937.
