Bishop Dennis Sullivan has called for a special collection this weekend in all parishes across the Diocese of Camden to help those in the Philippines affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan, which left thousands dead and almost a million people affected when it hit the central Philippines Nov. 8.
Collected funds will “support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Relief Services and for the rebuilding of the infrastructure of the parishes, schools, catechetical centers, clinics, etc. in the dioceses impacted by the storm,” said Bishop Sullivan in a letter sent to pastors (see page 3).
A percentage of the collected funds will go toward the long-term need of the church in those affected areas in the Philippines.
Filipino Catholics in the Diocese of Camden are currently organizing liturgies and fundraisers to help. On Nov. 14 there was a special liturgy to pray for the Philippines at St. Andrew the Apostle in Gibbsboro.
On Nov. 22, there will be a benefit concert for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, and for the earthquake victims of Cebu and Bohol in the Philippines, at St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Egg Harbor Township, starting at 6 p.m. Admission is $25. Catholic Relief Services officials committed $20 million in emergency aid for survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan.
“Our goal is to serve 100K families, about a half million people,” CRS president Carolyn Woo told the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Nov. 11, the first day of their annual fall general assembly in Baltimore.
CRS staff in the Philippines was rushing to restock emergency supplies in the wake of the storm, Woo said. The agency’s normally well-stocked warehouses were depleted of materials because of a widespread distribution of supplies after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook the central Philippines Oct. 15. The typhoon struck some of the same areas affected by the earthquake.
