
Sister Elvira Di Cerbo, MPF, 94, died peacefully on Ash Wednesday, March 2, at Saint Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown.
Born in Schenectady, New York, Sister Elvira entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1946. She received the habit in 1947 and made her religious profession in 1950.
Sister Elvira studied art, earning both a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s in fine arts from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., from which she graduated summa cum laude. In her 74 years of religious life, Sister Elvira served as a classroom teacher at both the elementary and high school levels.
While in the Diocese of Camden, Sister Elvira taught art for four years at Saint Joseph High School in Hammonton, and then ministered for 45 years at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield until her retirement in 2011. In 2003, Sister Elvira received the Bishop’s Medal for meritorious service, exemplifying excellence in helping to build and support the Church in South Jersey.
Sister Elvira came from a large, loving family. She had 10 siblings, all of whom predeceased her. She was especially proud to have a brother who became a priest, Reverend Almerico, and a sister who entered religious life, Sister Antonia, CSJ.
Sister Elvira’s mortal remains are buried at Ave Maria Cemetery, Villa Walsh.
