Sister Nora Foley, OP

Sister Nora Foley, OP (Sister Patricia Margaret) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, former principal and teacher in the Diocese of Camden, died April 9 in Wall. She was 89.

The daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret (Horan) Foley, she was born Feb. 26, 1933, in Kilcummin, Ireland, and entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, N.Y., in September 1954, making her first profession in June 1956, and final profession in August 1959.

Sister Nora earned her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh and a master of arts degree in administration from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

Sister Nora’s ministry in elementary education began in 1956, in Lindenwold’s Saint Lawrence School. After 11 years, she became principal at Sacred Heart School in Camden, serving there from 1967 to 1979, when she was named principal of Gloucester City’s Saint Mary School.

For 25 years, Sister Nora served faithfully in this position, until becoming an instructional aide with the Gloucester City Public School.

In 2011, she retired and moved to Asbury Park. In February 2013, she moved to Gloucester City and volunteered Monday through Friday, serving the homeless and taking Holy Communion to the sick and shut-ins.

In October 2015, Sister Nora moved to St. Mary’s Villa, Cherry Hill; in February 2020 she moved to Brandywine Senior Living in Wall, where she spent her final days. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 19 at Saint Mary Church in Gloucester City. Burial followed the next day at the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery in Newburgh.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Dominican Sisters of Hope Development Office, 299 North Highland Ave., Ossining, NY, 10562. Write in the memo: Sister Nora Foley.
