Over 800 Hispanic Catholics from South Jersey gathered in Vineland last Sunday at Divine Mercy Parish to celebrate their culture and know God’s everlasting love in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The highlight of the all-day event was Mass with Bishop Dennis Sullivan, who reminded attendees that the corporal and spiritual works of mercy aren’t so much for their heads and their own knowledge, but for their hands, to lift up their brothers and sisters.

The celebration also included participants crossing through the Door of Mercy; a praise and worship concert; and witness talks from local Hispanics, each sharing and reflecting on one of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

After a concluding meal, as participants departed for their own towns and parishes, they were handed postcards with the works of mercy written on them, reminders to themselves and those they work with of the Gospel mission.

The Hispanic celebration “fulfilled the call of the Year of Mercy,” noted Andres Arango, Bishop’s Delegate for Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Camden.

“First, people experienced mercy in crossing through the Holy Door. And second, they were encouraged to share it with others by the witnesses’ talks,” he said.
