Bishop Dennis Sullivan has named Father Robert E. Hughes as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese of Camden, effective Dec. 3.
Father Hughes has been chancellor of the diocese since 2011 and pastor of Holy Family Parish, Sewell, since 2003. He will continue to hold those positions.
As Vicar General, he will assist Bishop Sullivan in the governance of the six counties of the Diocese of Camden.
Father Hughes, 50, has served the diocese as an administrator, educator and parish priest.
He was ordained on Aug. 4, 1990, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden, after completing studies at Seton Hall, South Orange, and the University of St. Anselm, Rome.
His first assignment was as parochial vicar at Holy Saviour, Westmont, where he served from 1990-96.
He was president of Paul VI High School, Haddon Township, and previously was a member of the faculty there. He also served as secretary of the Office of Catholic Schools and vice-principal at Gloucester Catholic High School.
He has served the Camden Diocese as vicar for pastoral life, director of the Worship Office, and secretary of operations.
He also has been a member of the Committee for the Continuing Education and Formation of Priests, the Liturgical Commission, the Presbyteral Council and the Priest Personnel Board.
