SICKLERVILLE — Two parishioners of the newly-formed Our Lady of Peace Parish will hold a “cash for gold” event on Dec. 6 in Marion Hall to help the needy of the parish.
Mark and Lorna Fera, owners of Fera Jewelers, will buy old gold during the event, to be held from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., after each Mass with the sole purpose of donating 100 percent of their profits to the church.
“I was at a meeting of the Tithing Committee,” said Mark, “and we were trying to come up with ideas to raise money for the church.” He thought of the gold event since he was not only a jeweler but a gold buyer.
“This is a great way to serve the Lord and to help the needy of the parish,” he pointed out. “Father Mazzarella has the names of four or five families who are really in need and I brought forth the idea of the cash for gold, which he is supporting.”
Father Cadmus D. Mazzarella is pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish.
The Feras announced the event in the church bulletin as well as in the Catholic Star Herald. “I did this hoping that parishioners from other parishes might want to come by and help out and might want to sell their gold,” said Mark.
He explained that if he offers to buy a piece of gold for $500 and is later able to sell it for $600 that $100 profit would be donated to the church.
“And maybe the person who gets that $500 might want to donate part or all of it to help the needy,” Mark said.
The parishes of St. Mary of Williamstown and St. John Neumann in Sicklerville merged to create the new parish of Our Lady of Peace on Aug. 5. The parish offices are in Williamstown.
