Sister Alexis Searfoss, who served in Ventnor, dies

Sister Alexis Searfoss, OP, died Oct. 30 at Saint Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in the Gathering Place chapel at Sinsinawa Nov. 3, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Alexis made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1943, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1946. She taught for 25 years; ministered as principal for 23 years; and served as pastoral minister for 11 years. She served in Wisconsin, Illinois and New Jersey.

In the Diocese of Camden, Sister Alexis served Saint James School and Parish, Ventnor, as principal and teacher, 1986-92, and as pastoral minister, 1992-2003.

Sister Alexis was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Chicago, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Sullivan) Searfoss. Her parents; three sisters, Alice Searfoss, Virginia Thorne, and Sister Annora Searfoss, OP; and a brother, Frank Searfoss, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, cousins, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 73 years.
