Sister M. Geraldine DiNicola

Sister M. Geraldine DiNicola, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, Villa Rossello, Newfield, died Sept. 3 at Misericordia Nursing Center, York, Pa., where she had been a resident for the last few weeks.  She was 91.

Sister Geraldine was born April 9, 1930. She entered the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy on Sept. 4, 1945, and professed her vows Aug. 30, 1947.

Having earned a master’s degree in elementary education, Sister Geraldine was known for her dedication as an early-child and elementary school educator across numerous states. In New Jersey, she taught in Brigantine, Millville, Vineland and Swedesboro. She taught in various schools in Pennsylvania including Berwick, Hazleton, Hershey, Steelton, Old Forge and York; she also served in Dunkirk, N.Y., and Milford and Springfield, Mass. She was a principal in several schools. In her later years, she served as coordinator of religious education at Saint Mary, Old Forge, until her retirement to Mercy Residence in York in 2015.

Known for her friendliness and welcoming manner, Sister Geraldine enjoyed baking, sewing and writing, especially poetry.  She was talented in music and organized children’s choirs in some of the schools in which she taught. She was fluent in Italian and also conducted classes for adults.

In addition to her parents, Gerald and Susan, Sister Geraldine was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, Anthony and Angelo; and sisters, Sister Susanne, also a member of the Daughters of Mercy, and Rosalie Payne. She is survived by her religious community, a brother, Joseph, and a number of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 8. She was to be buried at Pieta Cemetery on the grounds of Villa Rossello, Newfield. Memorials may be made to the Daughters of Mercy, Villa Rossello, 1009 Main Road, Newfield, NJ 08344.
