
Sister Mary Paul Giordano, 77, a member of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy, and former teacher and parish minister in the Diocese of Camden, died July 29 at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in York, Pa., where she resided for the past several years.
Born March 29, 1947, in Philadelphia, she entered her religious community on Sept. 12, 1966, and professed vows Aug. 15, 1969.
After earning a bachelor of arts in elementary education, she taught for 10 years in Catholic schools, including in the Diocese of Camden at Saint Mary Magdalen, Millville (1979-1980), and Saint Francis of Assisi, Vineland (1996-1997). Sister Mary Paul also taught in Pennsylvania – in Harrisburg and Scranton – as well as in Massachusetts – in Worcester and Springfield.
She also served at Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Newfield, teaching religious education and visiting the sick and homebound.
Sister Mary Paul was involved with the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, acting as spiritual moderator in both the New Jersey and Pennsylvania chapters, and the Rossellian Family Outreach, lay associates of the Daughters of Mercy in New Jersey.
Calling her “extremely creative, a talented writer [who] loved sharing her joyfulness with everyone,” Sister Mary Paul’s religious community also remarked that she will “forever be remembered for her stories and jokes, which she used to bring a smile to all people she met, especially the ill and elderly.”
She is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Theresa Giordano Hauck. She leaves behind two brothers, Thomas and James Giordano; two sisters, Margaret T. Giordano and her husband, Robert Sultzbach, and Mary Clare Selway and her husband, Matthew; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and her religious sisters of the Newfield Province.
A Mass of Resurrection for Sister Mary Paul was celebrated on Aug. 1 at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, followed by her burial at Pieta Cemetery on the grounds of Villa Rossello, Newfield.
