The 2016 International Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Conference will be held on Thursday, April 14, at Caesar’s in Atlantic City, joining together legislators, educators, businesses, and community services to celebrate CAP projects worldwide and showcase the state’s efforts in the past 30 years to prevent child abuse and bullying.
The keynote speaker for the event will be Erin Merryn, a survivor of child abuse and, now, child abuse prevention activist, who is the inspiration behind “Erin’s Law,” which provides an age-appropriate curriculum for children on personal body safety in Pre-K through 12th grade, and educates them on how to tell if they are bring abused.
Author Yuri Morita, co-founder of CAP in Japan, will share how her organization helped survivors of the Japanese tsunami. Founders of CAP projects from Korea, Eastern Europe, and other places will speak on child abuse and bullying in their countries.
Workshops during the conference include “Could your child be involved in homegrown terrorism?” presented by the FBI and Homeland Security; “How child abuse sets the stage for trafficking,” by the Office of the N.J. Attorney General, Division of Criminal Justice; and “Students and gun violence,” by the N.J. Department of Education School Preparedness and Emergency Planning.
The Camden Sophisticated Sister’s Drill Team and R & B recording artist Carl Brister will provide entertainment during the conference.
“The partnership between the Diocese of Camden and N.J. CAP is so valuable to our efforts to protect the children entrusted into our care,” said Rod Herrera, diocesan Director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection.
“N.J. CAP has been teaching our children in our schools how to protect themselves from harm. The international conference will be a fascinating day of workshops and presentations,” he said.
