Christ the King Parish in Haddonfield will host a live virtual presentation later this month on “Immigration Then and Now: How Changes in the Immigration Laws Affect Migration Today.”
Immigration lawyer Joanna Gardner will address how immigration law has changed over the decades and the options for legal migration, and discuss the barriers and choices facing migrant families.
Originally from Haddon Heights, Gardner worked for two years as a communications and marketing manager for Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, before attending Rutgers Law School. In that capacity, she wrote many articles for the Catholic Star Herald documenting how the diocese and its parishes are involved in immigration issues.
In a 2019 interview with the newsletter of her alma mater, The Catholic University in Washington, Gardner talked about the poverty and suffering that she witnessed during a year of service at a Catholic non-profit in Honduras.
“Working for Catholic Charities,” she added, “also brought me into contact with refugees and refugee shelters, where I met people with incredibly inspiring stories.”
She is currently a Skadden Fellow working at HIAS Pennsylvania where she represents immigrants and refugees who have been victims of human trafficking or domestic abuse.
The presentation will be held on May 26 at 7 p.m. and is free of charge. To register, email Carol Pisani, pastoral associate at Christ the King, cpisani@ctkhaddonfield.org
