Mark Nimo, who was born in Ghana in West Africa and has ministered in dozens of countries, will share his faith with two audiences in the Diocese of Camden.
He will lead a diocesan evangelization training workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 7-9 p.m., at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish (Marian Hall), 32 Carrol Ave., Williamstown.
The next night, Wednesday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m., he will speak at the Theology on Tap session at Chickie’s and Pete’s, 6055 Black Horse Pike, Egg Harbor Township. There his topic will be “How to Walk on Water: Discipleship and Evangelization.”
Growing up in Ghana, as one of seven children, Nimo was raised by a mother and father deeply devoted to the Catholic faith. However, in his high school years, he found himself drifting away from his parents’ beliefs, and into a life “of partying and nightclubs.”
At the age of 20, he found out that a woman he had been with was carrying his child, an experience that changed his life. In the following days, Nimo had thoughts of not only forcing the mother to have an abortion, but also of taking his own.
It was in a local church during this time, though, when he was invited to a Catholic Charismatic Renewal group. Nimo found himself inspired by how “fully alive in their faith, joyful, happy in the spirit” they all were. Soon after, he decided to go to confession, calling it “a healing experience.”
Because of these moments, Nimo said, where God “disturbed” him, causing him to ask questions and, ultimately, give his life to God, “two lives were saved.” His 26-year old daughter, Elizabeth, now lives and works in Ghana.
Today, Nimo lives and works in Chicago, where he is involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement, and director of religious education at the Chicago parishes of St. Columbanus and St. Dorothy.
Nimo started studies at the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago in September of 2004 and graduated in May 2006 with a master of arts in pastoral studies.
He is currently working on his thesis, “Fostering Discipleship Among Young Adult Catholics in Ghana,” toward his Ecumenical Doctor of Ministry degree from Catholic Theological Union.
In his visit to the Diocese of Camden next week, Nimo will ask Catholics if they have ever been “disturbed” by God, and help them realize, through this encounter, how they can grow in the spirit.
“When he disturbs us, we ask what is the meaning of life,” he says. “And we find that God is the meaning, and we give our lives to God, as disciples who participate in the mission of Christ.”
Nimo is married to Mercy and has three daughters, Elizabeth, Michelle-Marie and Noelle.
