Enzo Fanelli’s goal 11 seconds into overtime completed one of the greatest underdog runs in New Jersey high school hockey history.
Fanelli’s second goal of the game gave the No. 7 seed Saint Augustine Preparatory School a 3-2 victory over top-seeded Delbarton on March 6 in the Non-Public state title game at the Prudential Center in Newark. It was the Hermits’ second state title in school history and first since 2007.
After defeating Seton Hall Prep in the first round of the playoffs, Saint Augustine knocked off No. 2 seed Christian Brothers Academy in the quarterfinal round, No. 3 Don Bosco Prep in the semifinal and No. 1 seed Delbarton in the championship game.
The Hermits trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the championship game but tied it twice by Fanelli and Ryan Vaites. Hermits’ goalie Bob Kennedy, who allowed only three goals in four playoff games, made 27 saves in the championship and turned aside 99 of 102 shots during the incredible playoff run. The Hermits finish the season with a 14-6-3 record.
