Bishop Dennis Sullivan is encouraging the Diocese of Camden’s faithful to take part in a special collection Aug. 10-11 for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington, D.C.

“For over 100 years, the critical infrastructure of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has served it well. However, time has a way of taking its toll,” Bishop Sullivan said. “Updating can no longer be delayed; it must be done to preserve the integrity of that magnificent structure. The proposed renewal project includes the modernization of heating and cooling systems, which are essential for the 365-day-a-year ministry that the staff of the Basilica provides.”

He continued, “The National Shrine relies on the generosity of donors, as it is neither a cathedral nor a parish church. For more than 100 years, this Basilica, which was built through the generosity of previous generations of Catholics, has served millions of pilgrims and visitors. Now our generation of Catholics is called upon to protect the future of the Shrine.”

The Bishop also stressed that he hopes representatives from all parishes and schools in the Diocese will attend the biannual diocesan pilgrimage to the shrine, which is planned for Oct. 26.

“Please … be as generous as [you] can to this monument of our Catholic faith. [Your] financial support will provide a lasting legacy at Mary’s Shrine for generations to come,” he said.
