The sixth-grade class in Bishop Schad Regional School, Vineland, wrote biographies of special people in their lives after studying the book “Wilma Unlimited.”
“Wilma Unlimited” tells the story of Wilma Rudolph, who was told she would never walk again after polio had paralyzed her left leg. Rudolph, however, went on to become the first American woman to earn three gold medals in a single olympiad.
In additional reading for the inspirational content, the students studied the structure of the book, and they used it for the biographies they wrote.
The students were responsible for choosing a subject, and setting up and conducting an interview with their own questions. The interviews were the basis for their writing.
The subjects of the biographies were invited to class to speak.
The students wrote about cousins, many of whom were in college who couldn’t attend the class, and grandparents and parents. One girl spoke about her ballet teacher who came in and talked. Another wrote about his mother who is a marathon runner.
