Sister Maureen Delaney, O.P. (Sister M. Joseph Rosaire) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died on Jan. 4, in Wall, N.J. She was 81 years old.
Sister Maureen taught elementary level at St. Rose of Lima School in Haddon Heights, (1955-60) and Sacred Heart School Camden (1970-73).
She also taught at other New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico schools. She moved to the Newburgh, N.Y. Center of Hope in 2007 and most recently resided at the Brandywine Senior Living facility, Wall, N.J. In addition to her regular ministry, Sister Maureen volunteered in a soup kitchen, tutoring program and church youth group in various locations in New Jersey.
Recognitions that Sister Maureen has received over the years include the Science Teachers Achievement Award in 1968; a grant to study in Sicily, Italy at the International School of Cosmology & Gravitation in 1973; an award in Career Education in the Science Classroom in 1979, and the NJ Education Association Award for Professional Development for a “Safety in Lab” project. She has received a number of grants and was listed in “Who’s Who in the World and in the East.” She received the President’s Achievement Award for Environment Protection Service (1989-91) and a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Law Enforcement Association in 1998.
Sister Maureen Delaney is survived by her sister, Barbara D. Hendrickson, her nephew and his wife, James and Bonni Delaney. Sister is predeceased by her brothers James and Joseph Delaney.
Mass of the Resurrection was Jan. 8 in the Founders Chapel in Guzman Hall at Mt. St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. Burial was in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery.
