Tom Chapin will perform a family concert at Sacred Heart Church, Camden, on Oct. 5, at 3 p.m.
Chapin will be accompanied by a children’s chorus of third, fourth and fifth graders from Camden, Collingswood and Haddon Heights that will sing back up for four of his songs.
A Grammy Award winner, Chapin has been writing and performing music for children and adults for 50 years. His newest CD is focused on teaching parents and teachers to how to help children with autism spectrum diagnosis how to participate more fully in their life.
The New York Times has called him “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music,” and Billboard has called him “the best family artist around.” Parents Magazine has written, “Nobody today is writing and performing better kid’s music than Tom Chapin.”
He has dedicated his recent music on care for the earth, the environment, the children, social justice, and sustainable food.
This concert is a chance for city and suburb to join together to celebrate One Earth, One Family Together, said an official of the Center for Environmental Transformation (CFET), which is sponsoring the event .
CFET is a faith-based non-profit that began in October 2005 by people who worship at Sacred Heart Church. Becoming a NJ non-profit in 2007 and a 501 (c) 3 in 2008, CFET cultivates nearly one acre of land in adopted lots, park gardens and CFET-owned land. The organization produces nearly 2,000 pounds of chemical free, heirloom vegetables a year, used in nutrition classes with the children of the neighborhood and sold at its Farmers Market each Friday afternoon.
It also has a 24-bed retreat facility for teens, college students and adults to spend a day, a weekend or a week to work in the neighborhood, to learn about Camden and its economic, political and environmental systems.
CFET also sponsors the Junior Farmer program for young people ages 14-18.
