Mercy Sister Mary Stephen Kelly, 97, who taught in Atlantic City and Camden, died on Sept. 13 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, N.J.
She attended St. John School, Collingswood, and Camden Catholic High School, graduating in 1934.
In 1936, she entered the Sisters of Mercy and began teaching. She taught at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Atlantic City, 1941-61, and Immaculate Conception, Camden, 1967-70, and several other schools in New Jersey.
In Camden she and her students made a documentary film, “A Day in the Life,” depicting the good and bad features of living in the city.
After teaching for almost 50 years, Sister Mary Stephen provided secretarial and liaison services in the Alumni Office of Georgian Court College, Lakewood. Moving to Mount St. Mary in 1984, she was a staff member in the Communication Office of the Sisters of Mercy.
In 1995, she was honored at the Annual Sisters of Mercy Benefit Dinner/Dance at Caesar’s, Atlantic City for her 20 years of teaching at Our Lady Star of the Sea School and her influence on the students in the South Jersey area.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 18 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center, St. Catherine of Siena Chapel. Interment was at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
