Sister Carmel Marie Paroli, DM, remembered for humor, love of community and Christ

Sister Carmel Marie Paroli, DM

Sister Carmel Marie Paroli, a Daughter of Our Lady of Mercy who was a teacher and principal in the Diocese of Camden, died April 2 at Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in York, Pa., where she had resided for the last three years. She was 84.

Born March 12, 1942, in Springfield, Mass., to Angelo and Mary (Nostin) Paroli, she entered her religious community in September 1960. She professed vows Aug. 15, 1963.

Sister earned a bachelor of arts in elementary education degree from Misericordia College (now University) in Dallas, Pa.

In the Diocese of Camden, she was principal of Saint Thomas the Apostle School in Brigantine from 1984 to 1989.  As a teacher, she served at Saint Mary Magdalen School, Millville (1968-1970 and again from 1975-1976); Saint Rose of Lima School, Newfield (1971-1972); Saint Mary School, East Vineland (1978-1979); and Saint Francis of Assisi School, Vineland (1989-1990).

She also served in the Pennsylvania dioceses of Harrisburg and Scranton, as well as the dioceses of Springfield and Worcester in Massachusetts.

After her teaching career, she earned a license in nursing home administration, and worked as administrator of Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for 17 years.

Retiring in 2014, she returned to the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy’s Motherhouse, Villa Rossello, in Newfield, where she served students of Our Lady of Mercy Academy and the surrounding community.

“She will forever be remembered for her sense of humor, her love of adventure, her dedication to her community, family and friends, and her untiring zeal to spread God’s love to the lives she touched,” he community said.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on April 8 at Misericordia Chapel, Misericordia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 998 S. Russell St., York, Pa. Her burial will be at Pieta Cemetery, on the grounds of Villa Rossello, at a later date.
