The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) honored St. Joseph High School’s Coach John DeMarco with its Field Hockey Award at the Annual Awards Program at the Pines Manor in Edison on Dec. 2. This award represents his service in the field of interscholastic athletics and his dedication to student athletes. He was the only field hockey coach selected from all public and non-public schools in the state. DeMarco graduated SJHS in 1984 and began coaching field hockey that September as Assistant Field Hockey Coach under Head Coach Dottie Cartica. In 1996, he became Head Coach. DeMarco has won 13 Cape Atlantic League National Titles, 4 South Jersey Group 1 Titles and 1 South Jersey Non-Public Title. He has a career record of 268 wins, 60 losses and 26 ties.
Neumann University inducted Lauren Toppi, a resident of Runnemede, along with four others, into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 19. “Lauren was just an all-time great athlete in the sport of field hockey, setting several marks in her career here at Neumann University. She helped the team form a consistent and effective offense during her years here,” Athletic Director Chuck Sack said during his introduction of Toppi at the ceremony. “She accomplished so much here and was a leader both on and off the field.” Toppi is a 2005 graduate of Neumann University. When she graduated, she held field hockey records in eight statistical categories, including points in a season, goals in a season, and game-winning goals. She still holds the records for shots attempted in a season (82) and shots per game (4.32).
