The two-hour presentation focused largely on Gregorian chant, and included both performance and history. From the ninth to the middle of the 20th century, Gregorian chant, also called plainsong or plainchant, was the mainstay of liturgical music in the Latin Church, in part because of its rhythmic affinity to the Latin language.
