Two students from Camden Catholic High School took to the podium April 3 to discuss how the Black Catholic Ministry Commission’s Scholarship Fund helped them attend Catholic school.
Michele-Grace Heywood and Zoe McKendrick, previous scholarship winners, were among the 175 attendees at the 30th annual Afternoon of Jazz held at Auletto Caterers in Deptford. Music from the To the Max jazz band filled the ballroom during dinner and dancing.

The event was sponsored by the Diocese’s Black Catholic Apostolate and Black Catholic Ministry Commission and held to support the scholarship fund, which awards monies to eighth-grade students of Black and African descent wanting to attend a Catholic high school in the Diocese.

“We’re all happy to be back again in fellowship and to share the richness of the Catholic faith with our sisters and brothers in the Black and African communities,” said Father Vincent Guest, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Camden, and coordinator of the Black Catholic Apostolate and Racial Justice Commission. He explained that the 2020 gathering was canceled due to the pandemic, and last year’s event went virtual.
