The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of October

Ty Costabile

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Football

Holy Spirit High School quarterback Ty Costabile broke a pair of 28-year-old records as he surpassed 1997 grad Ed Byrnes Jr.’s career passing yardage and career passing touchdown records during a thrilling 28-27 victory over Saint Augustine Preparatory School on Halloween night.

Entering November, Costabile stood at 4,829 career passing yards, including a career high 1,703 this season. Costabile has tossed 23 touchdowns this year and became the first player in school history to reach 60 for his career.

The lefty senior quarterback threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns in the Oct. 31 victory over the Hermits to raise the Spartans’ record to 5-3.

Emma Eddis

Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Newfield

Volleyball

You can look at a lot of key players in the volleyball program who are responsible for making this season the best one in Our Lady of Mercy Academy’s history.

Jumping to the forefront is junior libero Emma Eddis, who has contributed more than 300 digs this year, and more than 600 in her career on the Villagers’ back line. Eddis has also served up 50 aces and 102 service points through October.

Eddis has enjoyed a historic season, as OLMA defeated Cedar Creek in three straight sets in the semifinal round of the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament on Oct. 23 to punch their ticket to the tournament’s championship game for the first time in school history. OLMA was 18-5 heading into the state playoffs.

Sydney Hullings

Holy Spirit High School, Absecon

Tennis

The future of tennis at Holy Spirit High School looks extremely bright, especially with sophomore sensation Sydney Hullings.

The Spartans’ first singles player won 15 of 16 matches during the regular season, as the Spartans went 9-7 as a team. Hullings finished her regular season with 13 straight wins in addition to a victory in the first round of the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament.

On Oct. 3, after dropping the first set against Cedar Creek’s Alex Ruggiero, 3-6, Hullings battled back to win the second set 6-1, before winning the tiebreaker 10-7. She also pulled off a similar comeback against Oakcrest’s Madelyn Wise on Oct. 22, winning 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Lauren Iaccio

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Field Hockey

Lauren Iaccio made history by scoring the championship game-winning goal in the inaugural South Jersey Tournament of Champions in a 2-0 win over Clearview on Oct. 19.

The Camden Catholic High School senior has pieced together an impressive scoring campaign despite being one of the Irish’s top defenders. Through Nov. 1, Iaccio tallied a career high 11 goals and six assists this season while contributing to six shutouts in the defensive end, as Camden Catholic recorded a 14-6 record though Nov. 4. The Rutgers University commit entered November with 28 career goals and 45 assists.

Chloe Krupa

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Soccer

Chloe Krupa has the final say as the last line of defense on the Paul VI High School girls soccer team.

The junior goalkeeper has stood tall in the crucial moments, as the Eagles went undefeated in the regular season and won their first South Jersey Coaches Association Tournament in school history.

Krupa collected eight clean sheets this season and made 92 saves as the Eagles prepared for another run in the state playoffs. She worked overtime of late, making six clutch saves in a 2-1 OT victory over Cherokee in the Coaches Cup semifinal before adding eight saves in a 3-2 win over Shawnee in the championship game, which was also decided in extra time.

Zack Payne

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Soccer

Reaching 50 career goals was an achievement Zack Payne hoped to unlock during his final high school season at Gloucester Catholic.

On Oct. 3, he hit that mark and set the bar even higher. Payne scored four goals that day in a 7-3 victory over Mastery Camden, and he began his journey to 65 career tallies with a furious month that included 18 goals and seven assists.

Payne finished the season with 29 goals and 12 helpers and led the Rams to an 8-9-1 season, accounting for their most wins since 2016.
