The Catholic Star Herald highlights the Diocese’s student athletes who stood out during the month of October.

Alexandra Braem

Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, Pennsauken

Field Hockey

Alexandra Braem

Only a sophomore, Alexandra Braem is becoming one of the most dangerous and most consistent scorers in South Jersey. The Bishop Eustace Preparatory School forward logged 14 goals and 14 assists this season, setting personal bests in both categories. Braem helped the Crusaders earn a playoff home game, and the team advanced to the Non-Public A quarterfinals before bowing out to Saint Joseph Academy (Hammonton), 2-1, to end the season. Braem recorded a hat trick in the first round of the playoffs and at least one point in 12 out of the 16 games in which Bishop Eustace recorded a goal.

Maggie Carcillo

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Volleyball

Maggie Carcillo

Maggie Carcillo continues to pile up achievements and milestones as the Paul VI volleyball team continues an incredible run. Carcillo, a junior who can play any position on the floor, has helped the Eagles soar to a 20-2 record, which includes victories over teams in four different states. Carcillo, who spent her freshman year at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Pennsylvania, eclipsed career marks of 850 assists, 400 kills and 200 aces during a four-set victory over Ursuline Academy (Delaware) Oct. 18. Through Oct. 30, Carcillo recorded 129 kills, 218 assists, 81 digs, 62 aces and 18 blocks this season.

Alex Clark

Saint Augustine Preparatory School, Richland

Soccer

Alex Clark

Alex Clark’s best performance of the year came at a crucial time. The Saint Augustine Preparatory School senior recorded a hat trick in a 4-3 victory over Haddonfield on Oct. 20 to advance the Hermits into the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association championship for the first time since 2018. Clark’s hat trick, which included a penalty kick, was the second three-goal effort of his career and his fourth multi-goal game of the season. Clark, who scored a team-best 17 goals last season, was up to 16 goals and nine assists in 2024 entering the South Jersey Non-Public A playoffs. The Cape Atlantic League Tournament champs were 19-1 through Nov. 2.

Macy Huber

Paul VI High School, Haddonfield

Cross Country

Macy Huber

October was a productive month for Macy Huber and the Paul VI High School girls cross country team. Huber, a junior, ran 19:41 at Holmdel to help the Eagles win its fifth Shore Coaches Invitational team title and second in a row Oct. 5. Two weeks later, Huber took first place in 19:29 at the Camden County Championships at Camden County College to pace the Eagles to their first team title in eight years. Huber carried that momentum into November by placing first at the Bob Kiessling Invitational 5K in 18:10 at DREAM Park in Logan Township on Nov. 2, helping Paul VI win its second straight title and 18th in school history. Huber’s time at DREAM Park was the ninth fastest in the course’s history.

Mike Moritz

Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill

Football

Mike Moritz

Mike Moritz took another step as the Camden Catholic High School football team took a giant leap. Moritz, a senior quarterback, surpassed 1,000 passing yards for the season and 2,000 for his career as the Irish marched through another perfect month and stood at 9-0 heading into November. Moritz set a career high in single game passing yards by going 16-for-21 for 232 yards Oct. 12 in a 41-6 victory at Overbrook while also matching his career best four touchdown passes. Heading into the postseason, Moritz had accumulated 2,173 passing yards and 23 touchdowns in his career.

Lauren Narolewski

Gloucester Catholic High School, Gloucester City

Soccer

Lauren Narolewski

Lauren Narolewski surpassed a major milestone as the Gloucester Catholic High School soccer goaltender recorded her 400th career save Oct. 29. Narolewski made 13 saves in that game, the final game of the regular season. Narolewski, a junior, recorded eight shutouts this season as the Rams pieced together a 10-6-2 season, which included a quarterfinal appearance in the South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs. A few of Narolewski’s shining moments this season were in a pair of games against Clayton, which included a 20-save effort in a 1-0 loss Sept. 16, and a 12-save effort in a 1-1 tie Oct. 10.
