
Paul VI boys to play for basketball state championship

The Paul VI High School boys basketball team dominated Union Catholic, 53-35, to win the South Jersey Non-Public A championship on March 4. The No. 5 seed Eagles raced out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back.
Judah Hidalgo scored 15 points, Torren Greene scored 14 and Isaiah Thomas added 13 for Paul VI (22-9 record).
The Eagles defeated No. 4 Saint Joseph’s Metuchen, No. 1 Christian Brothers and No. 2 Union Catholic en route to its first South Jersey title since 1988. The Eagles will play Don Bosco Prep in the Non-Public A State Championship on March 8 at Rutgers University.
PVI girls, Bishop Eustace boys fall in sectional final
For the second straight year, the Paul VI girls and Bishop Eustace boys basketball teams each fell in their respective sectional championship games.
The Paul VI girls led by a point at halftime but fell 44-26 to Red Bank Catholic in the South Jersey Non-Public A final. The Eagles finished with a 23-5 record.
The Bishop Eustace boys once again ran into perennial powerhouse Saint Rose in the South Jersey Non-Public B championship, and the Crusaders were defeated, 82-40. Bishop Eustace finished 13-17 on the season.
2 Camden Catholic sophomores reach wrestling podium in A.C.
Camden Catholic sophomore Kage Jones was a state finalist at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall as he earned the right to duel Southern’s Matt Henrich in the state championship at 157 pounds. Jones dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the two-time state champ in taking second place.
At 126 pounds, top-seeded sophomore Sammy Spaulding experienced early heartbreak as he dropped a decision in the pre-quarterfinal round. Spaulding followed up with five victories in wrestleback consolations to finish in fourth place. Saint Augustine Preparatory School’s Anthony DePaul took fifth place at 138 pounds as the Hermits’ lone medalist.
Lehman, Bak lead big day for Bishop Eustace swimming
Local high schools filled the podium at the swimming Meet of Champions at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology on March 3.
Bishop Eustace Preparatory School sophomore Alyce Lehman posted a blistering time of 53.92 in the 100 yard butterfly to finish second in the state. Lehman also added a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Eustace’s Renee Bak took third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 free.
Our Lady of Mercy Academy also reached the podium four times as Scarlett McGlinchey took fifth place in both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. Teammate Isabela Valle finished fifth in the 500 freestyle, and the Villagers 400 freestyle relay team placed seventh.
On the boys side, Saint Augustine Preparatory School took six trips to the podium, led by a second-place finish by Michael McCarthy in the 500 freestyle. McCarthy finished in 4:28.34, ahead of teammate Jackson Cummins, who placed seventh. Cummins placed eighth in the 200 individual medley behind teammate Dante Buonadonna, who took fifth.
The Hermits 400 freestyle relay team (fourth place) and 200 medley relay team (eighth) also took home medals. Paul VI High School’s Alex Goodman placed seventh in the 100 butterfly as his school’s lone medalist
