ABSECON – On Sept. 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Bishop Joseph A. Williams celebrated the first Mass of the Holy Spirit of the 2026-27 school year with the students, faculty and administration of Holy Spirit High School. He was joined by Father Logan Nilsen, director of Catholic Identity for the school.
In his homily, the Bishop quoted Saint Francis de Sales’ writings on carrying one’s cross and how God will ensure “that it be not one inch too large and not one ounce too heavy for you.”
“He can take our greatest weakness,” Bishop Williams said, pointing to the cross on the altar, “and make it our greatest strength.” He urged the students to give all of their “worries, troubles and concerns” to God and trust in His love.
That message resonated with Jack Burns, a Holy Spirit senior. “I think a lot of people can relate. Everyone struggles with something.”
Contemplating Saint Francis de Sales’ quote, Burns added, “I think everyone can take that into their daily life. No matter how big the problem may seem, He gave it to us for a reason. He will never give us something we can’t handle.”

After Mass, Bishop Williams was joined by Dr. William Watson, superintendent of Catholic schools, school principal Michael McGhee, members of the school board and a select group of students for a tour of the school’s new walkway entrance that was renovated over the summer.
McGhee said the Bishop’s visit was inspirational for students and staff. “Bishop Williams’ energy and his message to our students were just phenomenal.”
Before ending his visit, Bishop Williams was presented with a special gift of Holy Spirit High School gear, preparing him for the upcoming fall weather.
