More than 1,200 people celebrated the 50th year of Camden’s Cathedral Kitchen on June 20, and its continuing mission to serve the community with dignity, compassion and hope.
In addition to free groceries and live music, guests were treated to family friendly activities such as games and face painting. Cathedral Kitchen’s culinary team, as well as alumni of its Culinary Arts Training Program – including Mami’s Kitchen, Chef Bu Catering, Foreign Flavors and Maria Station Café – served up free food during the event.
“Today is a celebration, but we also recognize that this is a challenging time for many families and individuals in our community. Rising costs and changes to SNAP and Medicaid benefits are making it even more difficult,” said Carrie Kitchen Santiago, Cathedral Kitchen president/CEO. “Moving forward, we don’t know what’s coming, but we know CK will continue listening, adapting, and finding new ways to serve the community with respect and dignity.”
Founded in June 1976 by four young volunteers, Cathedral Kitchen began with a single $150 donation, pooled personal savings and borrowed kitchen space from local partners willing to help. It has now grown into South Jersey’s largest emergency meal provider. Today, on Federal Street, its expansive services also include case management and on-site partnerships that help guests connect with housing resources, benefits assistance, employment opportunities, healthcare and other critical supports.
