More than 400 elementary school teachers from across South Jersey gathered Oct. 7 at Holy Spirit High School, Absecon, for the first diocesan-wide in-service day of the 2024-25 school year. The teachers started the day with a keynote presentation from Dr. Gene Kerns, chief academic officer at Renaissance Learning, an educational software company and curriculum partner of the Diocese’s Office of Catholic Education. After Kerns’ presentation, titled “Elements of Science of Reading Beyond Foundational Skills: The Other Parts of the Rope,” attendees broke into small groups for discussion. They also reviewed important details from a recent Middle States Accreditation survey, which was sent to school families over the last couple of weeks. Dr. Bill Watson, superintendent of Catholic schools, wrapped up the day, urging attendees to continue to collaborate with their fellow teachers for the betterment of their students.
