Recognizing the presence, history, traditions, diversity and contributions of the Hispanic community in the United States, the country is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The timing highlights the anniversaries of national independence of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua recognize Sept. 15 as their dates of independence, while Mexico observes Sept. 16 and Chile, Sept. 18.
This year’s theme is “Unidos, Somos Más (Together, We Are More),” emphasizing the collective strength, connection and collaboration in Hispanic and Latino communities.
In the Diocese of Camden, a number of upcoming events will be held during this time and beyond:
• Oct. 4, 2 – 6 p.m.: A Hispanic Diocesan Celebration with Bishop Joseph A. Williams will be at Divine Mercy Parish, 23 W. Chestnut Ave., Vineland, with the theme, “Living According to the Holy Gospel.” Known for drawing dozens from across South Jersey, the celebration will include Mass celebrated by Bishop Williams, and feature the procession of banners representing parish Hispanic ministries in the Diocese. After Mass, traditional Hispanic food will be served in the parish hall. For more information, call 856-583-6172, or e-mail Evelin.Morales@camdendiocese.org.
